Today's departure at 10 am saw us again on Hwy 1 for about an hour before we diverted to the scenic road over the beautiful Hai Van Pass. Most buses and trucks other than vehicles carrying hazardous material avoid these twisty high mountain roads and use the Hai Van tunnel. The journey over this pass on twisty hairpin roads was one of the most enjoyable to date. We stopped often for pictures and recorded our journey over the pass on the video cam. Continuing south we stopped at Red Beach to shoot some photos for friends that fought here during the Vietnam War and continued on through Da Nang to the ancient city of Hoi An and a five star resort. We are now at the half way point of our journey and we will spend two days here before rejoining the Ho Chi Minh Trail south. Goodbye Hwy One. The bikes are showing their lack of service as Dan's honda is leaking oil and his horn has stopped working. The horn will be replaced before we depart as it is a necessary item for safety. The wiring on my front signals has hardened and broke away although these are not necessary and never used. The brake lights on both bikes have never worked since departing Hanoi. With the good luck provided by LD we hope to make Saigon without any breakdowns.
